Join Hanna Satterlee, Director of ANIMAL Dance, to explore moving and dancing from an unplanned body. With thoughtful tactics and structured scores we will workshop multiple ways and styles of performing presence and cultivating connection beyond our own somatic experience.
We will play with spontaneous & impermanent dance creations, with the body as our tool and improvisation as our mechanism. Dance improvisation gives us practice in both being awake to making choices in the moment, as well as practice in learning to recognize the structure of the whole while simultaneously listening to our own loud inner experience.
With Hanna as the guide, we will experiment with such concepts on our own, collaborate playfully with one another, and spend time observing each others’ in-the-moment creations.
If the only thing constant is change, let us practice being awake and ready to participate.
Intermediate/Advanced
Ages 16+, experience recommended (this does not have to be formal dance training, but each participant should have a developed awareness of your body in space, and a mature understanding of the etiquette of collective dancing.)
Hanna Satterlee creates performance experiences and conceptual artworks for stage, site and film. Hanna holds degrees and certifications in dance therapy, psychology, performance, choreography, vinyassa/yin/restorative yoga, non-profit management and arts integration. Hanna shares these passions as an intergenerational educator, interdisciplinary performer + collaborator, experimental curator and event producer.
Hanna holds a double BA in Dance/Psychology with a concentration in Dance Therapy from Goucher College, and a Masters in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. Since 2006 Hanna has been a dancer in many US companies and collaborative performance groups, has worked internationally as an independent artist, choreographer, and movement and mindfulness teacher, and has received many grants and awards to support her performance, dance film and curatorial work. From 2010-15 Hanna served as the Director of Professional Programming & Director of Teen Jazz at the Contemporary Dance & Fitness Studio in Montpelier Vermont, and has been a guest lecturer at Johnson State College and Middlebury College, adjunct faculty at Vermont Law School, the University of Vermont and Northern Vermont University, and currently at Saint Michael's College.
In May ’17 Hanna founded the Vermont Dance Alliance, and served as the Executive Director through June 2021. In 2022, Hanna launched ANIMAL Dance Performance and Production Company, based in Burlington VT.
ANIMAL Dance Company's artistic work highlights the sentience shared between species, honoring the ephemeral language of the body in motion. Following the success of our first evening length tour of the "Tender Hearts" performance, the company will continue to create and perform a new work to tour on a yearly basis. Our show "This Is Also Possible" is now on tour throughout VT. ANIMAL Dance's curations and productions are designed to support independent artists, through informal and formal performances, artists' exchange groups, and classes and workshops. In January 2024 & January 2025, ANIMAL Dance produced the first ever INSTINCT Experimental Dance Festival in Burlington Vermont.
In continuous conversation as a curator, an educator, a choreographer and a performer, Hanna is as passionate for the form of dance as she is in connecting people to it.
