Copley Studio Gallery
January 14th, 2021 - April 9th, 2021

Vanessa Kotovich created her collections: Lugo- Natura through her senior year at Bard College and through the LugoLand Residency in Italy. The collections explore concepts of irregularity, distortions, fragility, beauty, and decay. The visual layers of her photographs are achieved within a setting with no computer or film manipulation.

Much of her work revolves around a passion for sanctuaries where historical motifs oddly interact with popular clichés. The colorful, lush, and surreal scenes are inspired by 17th Century botanical illustrations, religious relics, and dutch still life painting. Vanessa’s photographic process and subject matter form a mixture of ritual and child-like play building whimsical yet slightly disturbing scenes.

The LugoLand residency was made possible by Luca Nostri, Francesco Neri, Bard College, and Time Davis. Vanessa has had books produced from Natura as well as the Lugo collection. Her prior exhibitions include solo shows in New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Italy. She has been selected by Stephen Shore and paired with Eugene Meatyard at the Howard Greenberg Gallery.
