Paul Markowitz

pearlstreetmobiles.com

Inspired by Alexander Calder, Paul Markowitz’s work focuses on the art of balance, movement, color and line. Using storytelling and his imagination, he creates one-of-a-kind playful kinetic mobiles that reflect his love of nature.

“I have always been fascinated with the concept of balance and the many factors that affect it. Making mobiles is a very visible way for me to explore it further. I love to see how mobiles are art that rely on air movement and flow and how they reveal something that is otherwise hidden. I also like to incorporate whimsy into my work, with the goal of bringing smiles to viewers.” -PM

Chip Haggerty

Pulling from his daily life encounters, Chip Haggerty works in a stream of unconscious creativity. Using paper bags as his canvas, he creates works filled with humor, imaginative thought and fun.

“I kind of think of my pictures as a continuation of these large funky one-of-a-kind “Book Art” books I used to make… The books were mostly verbal when I first started, but they got more and more visual as I went along, which got me doing this mixture of text and image that I’ve been doing for maybe five years now. A number of the books had brown-paper-bag pages, which is something people ask about: “Why bags?”  The writing was…I am still working on a smart-sounding answer for that...” -CH

Northern Vermont Artist Association Member Show

February 23 - April 24, 2026

About the NVAA:

The Northern Vermont Artist Association was founded by a group of artists led by Harold Knight, in Burlington, Vermont. The year was 1931. Their first show was held at Ethan Allen Club, and among their first members was the renowned artist, Maxfield Parrish.

For the first forty years the annual NVAA Juried Show was held at the Fleming Museum, on the campus of UVM in Burlington, Vermont. The membership roster in those early years featured the names of nearly every important artist then working in Northern Vermont, including Francis Colburn, Georgia Balch, Ruth Mould, Stan Marc Wright, and Roy Kennedy. The NVAA has flourished throughout the years and is still going strong, with about 100 members and consistent exhibits in Northern Vermont. Members of the group work in a wide variety of styles, mediums, and motifs.

Mission Statement -  "To encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards and advance the cause of creative art."

Abstract^2

November 24 - January 9, 2026

River Arts presents Lisa Dimondstein, Julie Parker and Sandra Shenk in Abstract^2.

Lisa, Julie, and Sandra share a deep commitment to pushing the boundaries of photography as an expressive medium. After exploring the work of abstract sculptor David Stromeyer at the Cold Hollow Sculpture Park in Enosburg Falls, they were inspired to reinterpret his sculptures through their own visual language. By abstracting elements from multiple works, they focus on capturing the essential qualities and relationships within Stromeyer’s original forms—stripping away context, narrative, and representation.

Using an in-camera multiple-exposure technique, the artists intentionally remove any reference to recognizable objects or scenes. What remains is a vivid interplay of color, texture, movement, line, and form, inviting viewers to experience photography as pure abstraction.

Art by Committee

September 29 - November 9, 2025

Paintings, Photographs & Textiles by the River Arts Gallery Committee

Art by Committee brings together the creative voices of the very people who help guide River Arts’ gallery program. This exhibition features paintings and photographs by members of the Gallery Committee, offering a chance to see the “curators” step into the spotlight as artists.

With subjects ranging from landscapes to abstractions, portraits to everyday moments, the show highlights the diverse perspectives and talents that shape the gallery year-round

Varied in style and subject but united by their shared commitment to River Arts, these works remind us that behind every great exhibition is a group of artists dedicated not only to organizing shows—but also to making art of their own.
